With the announcement that the Central Post Office was placed on the Europa Nostra List of 7 Most Endangered Heritage Sites in Europe, we put the spotlight on European heritage in peril, raising awareness and paving the way for a viable future for the selected sites.
The building of the Post, which can be found in many world encyclopedias of Brutalism, was confirmed as European heritage yesterday. Let this be a motive for all of us, and also a symbol of creation of new energy and new impulse because the protection of cultural heritage does not only mean preserving the past but also shaping the future.
The selected 7 Most Endangered heritage sites are eligible for an EIB Heritage Grant of up to €10,000 per site. Although this aid can be considered as symbolic, it is still very important for us because the selection made yesterday opens the way to apply for EU funding.
We must no longer allow our negligence to cause more serious damage than that inflicted by fire. Let this beginning be an incentive to obtain the necessary professional, public and international support as well as the backing of the private sector. Solidarity of any actor must be a catalyst for achieving the ultimate goal.
